NEW MEMBER INFO MEETING 2006

Notes and Comments

The meeting was held at "Unwined" located in the Via Valenti shopping center, off Almaden Expressway on Tuesday, January 31, 2006.

While attending a District membership meeting, I noted that one club in the district held an informational meeting for prospective members. The get-together included wine and hors d'oeuvres. President John and I thought this to be a good way to introduce people to Rotary in a casual atmosphere with no pressure to join. The concept was discussed at the November board meeting and a date of January 31, 2006 was set for the meeting. "Unwined" a local wine shop was suggested as the venue. A committee was formed consisting of Mel, Rich, Shirley, Larry and Jeff. We met in December, 2005 to discuss the details.

Rich and Mel visited Unwined and discussed the event with Dan and Leticia Crouzet-Pascal, owners. We determined that Tuesday, January 31, a week- night, would be a good night to have the event since it is not a busy night for the shop. Based on his experience hosting these types of events, Dan recommended the Club buy two cases of wine. We also wanted to serve some cheese and meat plates and Dan said they could supply the food. Mel pointed out he wanted to put up poster boards and have some Rotary informational pamphlets spread around. We determined where they could go. We chose two white wines and two reds and bought a half case of each. Dan discounted the wines 15%.

In late December and through January, the event was discussed at every Club meeting. Each member was called to determine his/her participation in the event and if they were bringing any prospects. Mel compiled a list of 32 prospects. John Baker suggested we send each prospect a letter inviting them to the event. Follow up phone calls were made to each person the week before the event.

Jerry Gibson developed a 3-panel poster and Mel Bandanza did 6 posters describing Club activities for display at the meeting. In addition Mel brought 50 "Rotary Basics" pamphlets for distribution. Rotarians Paul Uenaka (Sharks tickets) John Baker (various handyman items) and the wine shop (wine basket) donated gifts for raffling off at the event. Bruce Curley's DVD of Club events was played. On the night of the event, Mel went to the venue at 4:30 to set up posters and discuss the nights activities with Dan and Leticia.

As the people arrived they were asked to sign a sheet with addresses etc. so that we could follow-up. 18 of 32 showed up. 23 Rotarians also attended.
